Oriental Carpet –

Learn About Its Beauty!

The beauty of oriental carpets is undisputable. Since long, oriental carpets have come to be appreciated for their beauty. This beauty is achieved through the choice of colors and designs, as also by the manipulation of designs and colors for forming pleasing patterns. Patterns in Oriental carpets are never predictable – a surprise here, a flourish there, some change of color, flip or rotation of a design where you might not expect it. The more you look at different oriental carpets, the more variations you will find. How can you explain this phenomenon? Is it due to human choice or human error? Well, the study of symmetry offers an approach for analyzing patterns in Oriental carpets. Through symmetry analysis, one can identify areas of pattern that exhibit expected repetitions and also the areas that vary from that expectation.

Learning More About Oriental Carpets –

The beauty of a carpet also depends upon the quality of yarns that go into its construction. The warp consists of one set of parallel yarns held taut on a loom. The weft here is composed of cross-wise yarns that interlace with the lengthwise warp yarns when weaving progresses. The pile is formed by rows of knots projecting from the foundation of interlacing warp and weft. Each knot is formed by the insertion of a supplementary yarn and then wrapping it around a pair of warps. Then, after weaving, the pile is cut to a uniform height. Only the pile yarns are visible on the surface of an oriental carpet and so understandable it is the pile that carries the colors, designs, and patterns. Thus, Oriental carpets have a two-dimensional appearance of surface design; however, they are three-dimensional in structure.

The type of knot that is used in the construction of a carpet is one of several technical characteristics, which provides a means of grouping Oriental rugs. The two typical types of knots used in Oriental carpets are called Turkish or Ghiordes knot and Persian or Senneh knot.

Persian knot –
In a Persian knot, the supplementary weft yarn passes behind one warp yarn. The two ends emerge one on either side of a warp yarn.
Turkish knot –
In a Turkish knot, the supplementary weft yarn passes over two warp yarns and emerges forming the pile coming between them.

Using soap for ant removal:

Introduction:

Soaps for ant control:

Any kind of soap or detergent can be used for removing ants. This method is commonly used as the best inexpensive home remedy for ant removal. However, its effectiveness is questionable. Usually, soap water is spilled in areas where ants are suspected to travel every day after food sources. Soap water destroys ant’s sense of smell and any sent of leftover food scraps. Soap solutions can be used for both preventing and controlling ant population. Many kinds of liquid soaps and floor disinfectants are available that provide you protection from ants in terms of prevention. Some soap products meanwhile work mostly on management level where you use them with an intention of eliminating ant colonies. Among different types of soaps, window cleaners are more commonly used for pest management as they can kill ants immediately on contact and leave behind no toxins that can endanger the life of your children or pets. Floor detergents that specialize in pest management can also be used to kill ants effectively. Changing the brand of your soap is essential to avoid creating resistance in ants.

Using soaps:

First step in using your homemade soap pesticide is by using an appropriate soap. Dishwasher soaps, detergents, window cleaners can be used effectively. Next important thing is the amount. You can use a teaspoon of soap in water and fill it in a spray. Your pesticide is ready. Using this solution in appropriate locations is very necessary. Preferably the spray should be used on common ant tracks and all nooks and crevices of your home and all entrances facing your backyard.

Advantages and disadvantages:

Soap is the most basic thing found in all households in some form or the other. Therefore, it is cheap and safe. It is considered an ethical way of controlling ants as compared to other chemicals, which kill ants brutally. However, soaps are not as effective for long-term ant control. Homeowners can find making soap based solutions rather tiring. They also cannot be used for controlling outdoor ant infestation.

Some tips for carpet selection and spot removal:
While selecting the colour of the carpet, take the time to look at large samples in your home, both by daylight and lamplight in the evening because the color you choose will look different under different lighting conditions.
For example light colored carpets will show more soil and require more maintenance than dark colors. Dark colored carpets are more effective in high traffic areas while multi-colors and patterned carpets are especially effective in hiding soil.
Here, the performance and quality of a carpet is directly related to the amount and quality of fiber that goes into the pile; the better the fiber and the denser it is packed, the better the carpet will perform. Thin, less dense carpet will lose its surface appearance faster therefore it is best to buy the highest quality you can afford.
The affected area of the carpet should begin its treatment immediately upon discovery because the more time that elapses before treatment, the more difficult a stain will be to remove. Hence for the best results they produce Mohawk FloorCare Essentials Carpet Spot Remover Cleaning Kit.

Using grits for ant removal:

Introduction:

There are many ways of terminating ants from your life. No other method is as controversial as using grits for ant removal.

Grits for ant removal:

Grits have always been considered as the best way of disposing ants. Grits are nothing but baits that are used to attract ants. Many types of foods like oatmeal corn etc are commonly used for this purpose. The success rate of this method was considered quiet high for controlling the ant population. However, while grits can work for some type of ants, it may not do so for other ants like fire ants. So how exactly does this method work? It is believed that ants eat grits and which then swell or rupture ant’s stomach. It is also believed that ant colonies feed the queens with grits, which makes her infertile, that then controls further ant population. Many homeowners painstakingly make different varieties of grits to get rid of the ants. Besides this, commercial pest control agencies have started manufacturing grit products, which guarantee permanent elimination of ant colony.

Controversy about grits and ant removal:

There are many controversies surrounding this age-old custom. The first is related to the ethical value of killing ants in such a brutal fashion. This method is not considered safe by environmentalist. However, the main issue is related to the effectiveness of the method. Many experts have started believing that using grits for ant removal is a myth, which has no scientific base. The reason is simple. Many kinds of ants cannot even digest solid food present in the grit. Therefore its attractiveness for the ants will be definitely less. Infact, ants prefer solid food only in the last stage of their growth, but mostly, ants survive only on liquids. Many a times people simply throw grit like corn on ant colonies forcing the ants to change their homes altogether and move some place else. Dispersing of ant colonies can go unnoticed leading people to believe that the ants are eliminated, when in reality they are just moving away somewhere else on your property. Grit can also attract other types of pests who can feed on your grit comfortably.

Using Grits for ants is therefore considered as an ineffective way of controlling or eliminating ant population.

Laying Carpet –

Want To Learn How To Do It?

For carrying laying out of your carpet, you need some basic tools like: a utility knife, tape measure, straightedge, hacksaw, chalk line and awl. You need to have the tack strips and pad in place. After this is done, you can start laying the carpet.

How to Lay the Carpet?

To begin, cut the carpet with a carpet razor knife and also get a pack of extra blades. You must cut the carpet oversize a couple inches all around. You can lay it out on the street or driveway and rough cut it there. Then lay it inside and hook it on the tack strips in the middle of one wall and break out the stretcher.

If you are just doing only a patch, you can stretch the carpet with your hands or with a vacuum cleaner floor tool. But for a room, rent a carpet stretcher kit. It comes with the gripper head and many telescoping tubes. Brace it with a length of 2×4 (to protect the base molding) against the far wall (where you began hooking the carpet down). Set up the tubes so the power head ends up close to the other wall. Hook the gripper head to the carpet and use the lever arm for forcing the carpet in place. When it is in place, push the carpet down on the tack strip.

Then shift the stretcher by a slight angle and set the next edge of the carpet in place. Now, reverse the stretcher and do some work on the first wall. Work back and forth for a while. Then start in the middle of one side wall and then in that direction, back and forth until you get the carpet pretty well in place. While working on the corners, the carpet tends to fight you. So start trimming it. Using a razor knife cut the carpet, to make the edge fall under the base molding. Then tuck it under with a setting iron. Use the hammer on the tool for forcing the carpet into the crack under the base molding. You can even rent an edge trimming tool as buying one is expensive.

Use of mint as an ant repellent:

An over view:

Ants have become a serious nuisance pest in hospitals, rest homes, apartment dwellings, hotels, grocery stores, food establishments and other buildings. The ant feed on a wide variety of foods including jellies, honey, shortening, peanut butter, corn syrup, fruit juices, baked goods, soft drinks, greases, dead insects and even shoe polish. Some of these ants gnaw holes in silk, rayon and rubber goods. Ants are even have been found in surgical wounds, I.V. glucose solutions, sealed packs of sterile dressing, soft drinks, water in flower displays and water pitchers. Scientific researches reveals that ants are also capable of mechanically transmitting diseases and contaminating sterile materials. Some medical practitioners feel Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas infections, occurring from time to time in hospitals, are associated with ants.

Control measures:

Ants are usually much harder to control than any other insects because of their ability to disperse. There are possibilities of the presence of several dozens or hundreds of colonies in a single hospital and while a few colonies are missed during control, populations may quickly rebound. On an average about 90 percent of the ants remains hidden in the nest hence even if a residual pesticide kills 10 percent of the colony, the remaining reservoir of ants is enormous. It is seen that the conventional contact pesticide applications especially repellent products such as pyrethrums may spread infestations to new areas with multiple colonies blossoming within the same structure. Ants are seen to avoid certain pesticides and that makes the control more difficult and often a long term leading to months and years.

Mint as an effective repellent:

Ants are an intimate part of almost every home and every home shares it’s resources with these tiny, often-unseen invaders.
